Play Therapy
What is Child-Centered Play Therapy?
Child-Centered Play Therapy is an evidence-based intervention designed for children aged 2 to 12 who are experiencing social, emotional, behavioural, or relational disturbances. It aims to provide an environment of safety and consistency that allows the child to express themselves through their natural language of play. Child-Centered Play Therapy is a one-on-one modality that focuses on the therapeutic relationship to enhance children’s functioning.
The therapeutic relationship is developed using 8 guiding principles:
1. Developing a warm and friendly relationship with the child.
2. Accepting the child unconditionally.
3. Establishing a feeling of relaxation and permissiveness in the relationship.
4. Identifying and reflecting the child’s feelings.
5. Respecting the child’s innate ability to solve their own problems.
6. Allowing the child to direct play and conversation.
7. Recognising that the child’s process may be gradual and take time.
8. Establishing boundaries with the child only when necessary.
Child–Centred Play Therapy involves initial and periodic consultations with parents. It may also require consultations with teachers and other professionals.
